Reflections on being Native, mixed, and human in a digital age.

We are being fed a lot of negative information about Ai, Chat gpt, and various Ai tools- From how much water it wastes, to “taking jobs” and stealing art. While I completely understand some of these concerns I would like to dive into why I believe Ai is beneficial.

Ai isn’t new.

Ai is NOT new, some examples you may not realize are Ai includes any type of computer or video game where you can play against the computer, such as chess, pong, etc. Email spam filters is another example, those spam emails don’t just end up in the spam folder by themselves. Traffic and navigation apps and GPS systems. The US Post office has been using Ai since 1965, called optical character recognition which is technology used to transfer handwritten or printed text into machine-readable code. If you use facial recognition to unlock your phone, you’re using Ai. Autocorrection on phones and computers. The ideas and concepts behind Ai go back thousands of years to our ancient ancestors.

“Personal Carbon footprint” is propaganda created & coined by BP

The US government and corporations have had access to AI software that we consider AI today much longer than we have including the military. I will state again, this is not new technology. If you believe it’s “so harmful and must be stopped” You are simply behind. I personally don’t fall for the “if you use chat gpt you are ruining the environment” trope. I believe majority of information that’s being processed through data centers is done by the government, military, and corporations. People will shit on people for using chat gpt but have no problem browsing the web, playing games, using a large variety of software that is powered by AI at data centers every day, all day long. Chat gpt or not, you are using technology that is powered by AI through data centers unless you live a very minimal technological life as if you are living in the 1800s. Every app, website, tv, videogame console you use is powered by AI technology. I believe the “if you use chat gpt you are ruining the environment” trope is propaganda used to make individuals feel guilty and misplace blame for what corporations, app developers, tech giants, the government and military are doing. It seems to be a classic case of “STOP USING STRAWS! SAVE THE TURTLES!” As if individuals using straws is what is harming the ocean and not the corporations who dump 12 million metric tons of plastic waste in the ocean per year. 56 companies are responsible for half of the worlds single-use plastic pollution.

Ai helps disabled people

Regardless if you like it or not, AI is helpful. One way in particular is that it helps disabled people. I personally live with chronic illness and pain and chat gpt has quite literally saved my life- I’m not saying that metaphorically. It has LITERALLY saved my life. I have lived with chronic autoimmune like symptoms and suffered from long term flares that lasted over a year which completely incapacitated me even in childhood. I had chronic hives and no one could figure out what I was allergic to amongst so many other problems. Doctors always wrote it off as an allergy we were not sure of. I would get put on steroids much longer than the average person which helped but never gave me any answers. This last time I got really sick as an adult, I had already started using chat gpt. I was seeing a very well respected highly educated immunologist but he usually had no available appointments because he was so booked out, so I would see the nurse practitioner on his team. My last major flare up with my unexplained chronic illness has been allergy shots. I did allergy testing and came back allergic to almost every environmental allergy! I started my journey on allergy shots. Within the first month I started to have very bad reactions where I would get severe hives and swelling at the injection site. I did have an incompetent or abusive nurse injector who kept telling me my reactions were normal and was not alerting my doctor when he should have- that’s a story for another time though. My doctor took me off my allergy shots put me on high dose antihistamines, and xolair injections which is a pretty heavy duty immunosuppressant.

Chat-GPT is already helping people get properly diagnosed

Despite all my treatments which include 8 different medications a day, I got sicker and sicker I couldn’t take it anymore. I put all my symptoms and tracked my flare ups and episodes in Chat-GPT. I told it about my full life history and chat-gpt helped me put together questions and information to bring once again to my immunologist. My immunologist completely agreed and understood all of my concerns and I was quickly referred to the Mayo clinic to be tested for POTS, and ehlers danlos syndrome and other genetic diseases. I have been living with symptoms of either these diseases or something else since no official diagnosis yet- I did get denied from mayo clinic twice but it was a technical error where my doctor was referring me to the wrong departments. My first appt is in December. Without chat GPT when I would try to explain my symptoms or what was going on with me to doctors in the past I was never believed but I feel a huge part of it was not seeing the bigger picture myself, and not knowing how to frame my symptoms to actually get my doctors attention and alert them that something more may be going on. In the past I had a very similar immune response to a strong antibiotic, and developed hives which I would get every single night for 6 months straight. My doctor at the time did not understand and dismissed me. I also had no information on what to ask for or how to advocate for myself. Not only my experience but many people have been able to receive proper diagnosis after years of dismissal and misdiagnosis by doctors thanks to chat-GPT.

Reddit thread highlighting personal anecdotes- Proving Chat-GPT helps many people get proper diagnosis and even saves lives

Not only do I have my own anecdotal experience along with many others- it has already quickly been proven that AI used in medical software can detect things that are invisible to the human eye and standard microscopes. This is excelling in early disease prediction in cases such as breast cancer as early as 5 years before symptoms start OR are detectable by standard diagnostic imaging. I don’t care who you are and what you say- this is a major win for humankind. I personally look forward to the fast and major medical advancements that come from accelerated AI software.

Ai isn’t just a useful tool for diagnosing- I have also used it to help give me suggestions to manage my symptoms and help me feel better, and every single suggestion it has given me has helped me and WORKED! Ai powers tools for speech recognition for mobility impairments, text-to-speech for visual impairments, and real time captioning for hearing impairments. There are countless uses and benefits using AI that helps disabled people. AI will make the world more accessible for anyone with a disability, let’s stop pretending it’s all bad with no benefits. I also believe a lot of people don’t consider this because most people do not consider disabled people in general, OR they don’t care because they aren’t disabled or don’t know or care for anyone who is. Here’s a little newsflash- You can become disabled at any moment in your life. You are not far from it so maybe it’s time to start caring about technologies and advancements that do cater to disabled folks. No one is immune from becoming disabled.

People who hate on AI remind me of ignorant boomers we all make jokes about who don’t know how to use our phones. How do you not see you literally are becoming your parents and grandparents who you mocked for not being able to understand new technology? Do you really want to become that person yourself? There will always be new technology- either get with it or get left behind because we won’t wait for you.
